ICCROM strengthens cooperation to promote Uzbekistan’s cultural heritage on the global stage
Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral, Director-General of ICCROM, a prestigious international organization in the field of cultural heritage conservation, visited the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan and emphasized that the exhibitions on display can give all of humanity a sense of belonging to its historical and cultural roots.
During her first visit to Uzbekistan, Gujral explored the Center’s exhibitions, surveying rare manuscripts, archaeological artifacts, historical sources, and the legacy of great scholars.
She noted that the distinct uniqueness of the Center lies in its ability to present cultural heritage not merely as a collection of historical relics, but as a living, enduring value that bridges contemporary society with its civilizational origins.
“I was profoundly impressed. Here, one can witness the immense potential of the Uzbek people and the great care they devote to their historical and cultural heritage. Above all, the Center evoked in me an acute sense of cultural identity and resonance. I am convinced it offers visitors across the globe an opportunity to rediscover their own cultural and historical roots. After all, culture brings people together. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the President of Uzbekistan for creating such a remarkable place. I believe that a very ambitious and far-sighted vision was behind the establishment of the Islamic Civilization Center. This Center can benefit not only the Uzbek people or the people of the region, but humanity as a whole. Through strategic partnership with ICCROM, we will help further promote the knowledge and expertise accumulated at the Islamic Civilization Center. We want to contribute to ensuring that the rich cultural heritage that has developed in Uzbekistan can benefit people around the world,” said the ICCROM Director-General.
During the visit, the Director-General of ICCROM met with the Director of the Center, Firdavs Abdukhalikov, to discuss collaborative frameworks for heritage conservation, exchanging scholarly expertise, and expanding international cooperation.
At the end of the visit, Ms. Aruna Francesca Maria Gujral wrote her impressions in the Center’s Book of Honored Guests.
