UNESCO unanimously supported the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan’s international initiative dedicated to protecting cultural heritage has been unanimously approved by the UNESCO Executive Board. This is a significant international recognition of our country’s sustained efforts to preserve its profound historical and cultural heritage and to develop international cooperation.

The decision was adopted during the 225th session of the UNESCO Executive Board at the organization’s headquarters in Paris. The initiative was put forward by the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, at the UNESCO General Conference held in Samarkand in October last year.

The initiative aims to prevent contemporary threats to cultural heritage sites arising from climate change, natural disasters and globalization, and to strengthen cooperation among states, international organizations and the scientific community in protecting them.

In accordance with the decision, an international symposium will be held in Khiva in 2027 with the participation of UNESCO. It will address the preservation of cultural heritage sites, the integration of modern technologies and the transmission of traditional knowledge to future generations. Uzbekistan’s initiative was supported by 54 UNESCO Member States, including China, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Türkiye, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan. Preserving cultural heritage means not only protecting the past, but also passing on the shared spiritual wealth of humanity to future generations.
