Professor of Seoul National University: “Uzbekistan is one of the cradles of civilization”

04.03.2026, 14:09908

Korean professors and doctors who visited the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan became closely acquainted with the legacy of the great physician Ibn Sina and the contribution of Central Asian civilization to world science.

During the visit, guests were provided with information about the activities of the Center, established at the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, its exhibition concept, and the unique historical sources displayed there. Members of the delegation examined examples of cultural heritage from the pre-Islamic period with great interest.

In particular, the exhibition of ancient chess pieces made a strong impression on the guests. Through this exhibition, it was noted that the deep roots of intellectual games and the culture of strategic thinking in the territory of Central Asia were clearly demonstrated.

The section of the Center dedicated to the First Renaissance also attracted special interest from Korean medical specialists. In particular, the immense scientific legacy of the great physician and thinker Ibn Sina in the field of medicine left a deep impression on the members of the delegation. It was especially emphasized that his famous work The Canon of Medicine influenced the development of world medicine for centuries and played an important role in shaping the principles of modern medicine.

Professor Sanghoon Jheon, former President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and President of the Asian Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, shared his impressions of the visit and noted that the heritage presented at the Center deeply amazed him.

Visiting the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan has been a great honor for me. I am extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to directly see how ancient Uzbekistan made a tremendous contribution to the development of human civilization. By coming here, I once again realized that many civilizations began precisely in the territory of present-day Uzbekistan. This land has long served as a center of science and intellectual thought, — he said.

According to the professor, Ibn Sina’s scientific legacy in medicine has not lost its significance even today. In his opinion, seeing such a rich scientific heritage gathered in one place is of great importance for every representative of the medical field.

The images of fourteen scholars displayed in the “Hall of Honor” exhibition at the entrance of the Center left a special impression on me. This exhibition conceptually demonstrates how Central Asia, particularly the territory of Uzbekistan, has made an unparalleled contribution to human civilization. Here, history is not only presented, but its close connection with present and future development is also clearly revealed, — the professor added.

According to him, having the opportunity to visit the Center on the eve of its official opening is a great honor. He also expressed his desire to visit again in the future with his family and colleagues.

If I had to describe the Center in three words, I would say “amazing, amazing, and proud.” The heritage presented here is a priceless treasure that can be proudly mentioned not only in the history of Uzbekistan but also in the history of world civilization as a whole, — said Sanghoon Jheon.

Korean professors emphasized that presenting historical heritage through modern technologies at the Center clearly demonstrates the continuity of the development of science and medicine. They described the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan as an important platform not only for culture but also for scientific dialogue and international cooperation.

At the end of the visit, members of the delegation noted that the rich historical and scientific heritage gathered at this institution can also serve as a source of inspiration for modern scientific fields, including sports medicine.
