Fortresses, manuscripts, and mysteries: a journey to ancient Khorezm / photo report

The exposition “Ancient Khorezm Civilization,” located in the “Pre-Islamic Period” section of the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan, illustrates how traditions of statehood were formed in Central Asia through archaeological discoveries and written sources.

As early as the first millennium BCE, a settled lifestyle, irrigated agriculture, and urban culture had developed in the Khorezm oasis. The materials presented in the exposition provide insight into the governance system, craftsmanship, and spiritual life of the society of that period.

Important monuments related to the formation of the ancient Khorezm civilization, its social life, and its historical development also occupy a special place here.

The inhabitants of ancient Khorezm used the fertile lands of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya basins to develop irrigated agriculture and establish urban culture. Archaeological findings show that economic and social life in this region had already developed in an organized and systematic manner from very early times.

Koy-Krylgan-Kala is considered one of the unique monuments of ancient Khorezm architecture. According to researchers, this structure was not only a fortress built for defensive purposes but also one of the scientific and spiritual centers where astronomical observations were conducted by the ancient inhabitants.

Written documents discovered in Toprak-Kala demonstrate that a well-developed administrative system, accounting practices, and administrative procedures existed in the ancient Khorezm state. These findings confirm that traditions of statehood in the region began to form at a very early stage.

The exposition also displays pages of the Avesta, models of ancient Khorezm cities, and ossuaries used in Zoroastrian rituals. These exhibits provide important insight into the ancient religious beliefs and cultural traditions that developed in the region.

The civilization of ancient Khorezm holds an important place in the history of Central Asia. The urban culture, irrigated agriculture, writing traditions, and systems of governance that developed in this region created a strong foundation for the development of later historical periods.

This exposition at the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan provides visitors with a clearer understanding of the rich historical heritage of ancient Khorezm and its place in the development of world civilization.
