Civilization at the crossroads of trade routes / Photo report
In the section dedicated to the pre-Islamic period at the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan, the history of ancient trade routes is presented through an interactive map. It brings together information about well-known routes such as the “Lapis Lazuli Road,” the “Royal Road,” the “Silver Road,” the “Steel Road,” and the “Great Silk Road,” which once passed through the territory of our country and influenced the development of the entire region. These routes served not only as channels of trade but also as a strong foundation for cultural and scientific exchange.
Formed in the 2nd century BCE, the Great Silk Road served for nearly 18 centuries as the most important link between East and West.
Through the interactive map at the Center, visitors can explore the cities along this route and learn about their historical significance.
At the initiative of the President, the map has been further expanded to include ancient cities of Central Asia and Azerbaijan — Osh, Uzgen, Taraz, Merv, Khujand, and Gabala — as part of this cultural and trade network.
The exposition also features several unique exhibits that reflect the atmosphere of ancient trade routes.
A cotton installation, Kushan coins, textile samples, a statue of the Bactrian camel, and a video project about the Sogdian market allow visitors to imagine the lives of caravans and merchants.
Through these exhibits, it becomes clear that ancient trade was not only an economic activity but also a process of cultural exchange.
Particular attention is drawn to the chess pieces discovered at Dalvarzintepa displayed in the hall. According to scientific research, they are among the oldest such finds in the world and were created nearly four centuries earlier than similar examples found in India. This discovery once again confirms that Central Asia was one of the ancient centers of culture and intellectual life.
This exposition at the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan presents the history of trade routes in a new interpretation as a valuable historical heritage. It clearly demonstrates that the territory of our country served for centuries as an important crossroads where civilizations met and ideas and cultures were exchanged.
