Tashkent: President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev officially inaugurated the Islamic Civilization Center in Tashkent on Tuesday.
The event, held alongside an iftar ceremony, brought together public figures, religious leaders, diplomats, representatives of international organizations, and citizens from various regions of the country.
The President described the new Center — an initiative proposed by Uzbekistan at the United Nations General Assembly and established with broad international support — as a symbol of scientific, spiritual, and educational development.
Located near the historic Hazrati Imam complex, the Center presents the region’s history from pre-Islamic times to modern Uzbekistan. One of its main highlights is the Qur’an Hall, where one of the world’s oldest copies — the Uthman Mushaf — is preserved. It is regarded as the most valuable and sacred historical artifact of the Center.
Over the past year, the Center’s collection has been significantly enriched, with more than 1,500 new exhibits added, including manuscripts, archaeological finds, and historical maps.
The Center hosts offices of several international organizations, including ICESCO, IRCICA, TURKSOY, the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, and the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan.
The President expressed gratitude to all participants and emphasized that efforts to repatriate historical heritage will continue. He expressed hope that the Center will become a leading scientific and educational institution promoting education, science, peace, knowledge, and humanism.
The event concluded with recitations from the Qur’an and prayers for the country’s prosperity.
Last year, a fragment of the sacred kiswah of the Kaaba was presented to the Center by Saudi Arabia. It was handed over to the President by Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq Al-Rabiah on the instructions of King Salman. This sacred piece has been placed in the Center as a symbol of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
