The Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan: how a cultural project became a global media event
Leading international media outlets — CNN, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Arab News, and China Daily — are describing this project as a “global megaproject,” a “jewel of Central Asia,” and “a space shaping a modern vision of Islamic civilization.”
The opening of the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan has attracted significant international attention and become a focal point for global media. Materials about the Center have been published in more than 20 countries and in 7 languages — English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Turkish, and Russian. Their total audience has exceeded 1.5 billion people. The materials were prepared by international journalists, analysts, and experts, demonstrating the high level of interest from the global professional community in this project.
International media have also emphasized the symbolic significance of the event. According to Arab News, “the opening of the Center, initiated by the President of Uzbekistan, coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan — just as the first foundation stone was laid eight years ago — gives it a special historical and spiritual continuity.” Khaleej Times describes the Center as “a unique space combining advanced technologies and modern scientific approaches.”
Forbes notes that “under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the country is implementing a strategy of sustainable development and economic openness.” At the same time, amid growing geopolitical tensions and debates around cultural identity, the Islamic Civilization Center is “transforming civilizational heritage into a modern instrument of ‘soft power’.” The Wall Street Journal emphasizes that the Center serves to “bring together a rich historical heritage.”
China Daily describes the Center as “one of Uzbekistan’s key cultural and scientific projects,” highlighting its role in strengthening cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Uzbekistan and China. The Korea Times notes that the complex “reflects the humanistic and educational essence of Islamic civilization” and serves as “a modern platform for cultural dialogue and scientific collaboration.”
Euronews evaluates the Center as “a new hub for heritage and research,” combining scientific research, education, and modern exhibition practices. Spain’s ABC publication writes that “Uzbekistan is reviving the legacy of the Great Silk Road,” linking the project to the region’s historical role as a center of civilizational exchange.
Hungary’s Hello Magyar notes that “the complex impresses not only with its scale but also with its full compliance with modern urban planning and environmental sustainability standards.” Turkey’s Yeni Konya describes the Center as “a grand and monumental complex that can be considered one of the most significant historical, cultural, and artistic achievements of the past century.”
Azerbaijan’s Caliber.az highlights that the Islamic Civilization Center has been recognized as a “candidate for the Guinness Book of Records,” further confirming its scale and uniqueness.
The Islamic Civilization Center is not merely a new museum; in a broader sense, it is becoming part of a historical process in which countries rediscover their heritage and present it to the world in an accessible way. Today, the Center is already open to visitors. Experts also emphasize its enormous potential for the development of cultural tourism. The new complex makes Uzbekistan even more attractive as a destination with a unique historical and intellectual heritage. However, judging by global media attention, its significance extends far beyond tourism.
