“More people should know that Uzbekistan is the homeland of chess” — CEO of a U.S. bank amazed in Tashkent

The delegation led by John Jovanovic, President and Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, visited the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan and became closely acquainted with the heritage of ancient civilizations that emerged in the territory of our country, Islamic culture, and modern museum technologies.

During the visit, the guests first toured the section dedicated to pre-Islamic civilizations, where they viewed unique artifacts and historical exhibitions with great interest. Members of the delegation paid particular attention to a three-thousand-year-old deer figurine, the Great Silk Road installation, and exhibits illustrating the ancient cultures that flourished in the region.

Of particular interest were the original chess pieces discovered in the Surkhandarya region, which are regarded as some of the oldest chess artifacts in human history. After carefully examining them, John Jovanovic remarked that he would certainly share this information with his colleagues and relatives, stating: “More people should know that Uzbekistan is the homeland of chess”.

The delegation was also especially interested in a replica of a Chach-period mace. The interactive presentation of the exhibit, which allowed visitors to touch and handle it, sparked considerable curiosity among the guests.

The visit continued in the Qur’an Hall. The rare manuscripts on display, information about the history of the Holy Book, and a multimedia show created using modern mapping technologies left a profound impression on the delegation. In particular, John Jovanovic highly appreciated learning that the Mushaf of Caliph Uthman had been preserved in the territory of present-day Uzbekistan for centuries, noting that he would also share this remarkable fact with those close to him.

The mapping show projected onto the Center’s exterior facade became another unforgettable experience for the delegation. While watching the spectacle created through the harmonious combination of light, architecture, and modern technology, the guests emphasized that every detail of the project had been carefully designed and that a high level of attention was evident in both the exterior and interior solutions of the building.

John Jovanovic specifically noted that his visit to the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan had left a lasting impression on him. He expressed a desire to return and devote more time to exploring the exhibitions in greater detail.

This unique institution, where history, enlightenment, and innovative technologies come together, continues to provide international visitors with a deeper understanding of Uzbekistan’s rich cultural heritage.
