Hakim Tirmidhi’s rare masterpiece is being published in Uzbek in its complete form for the first time
The Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan has achieved another significant milestone through its extensive efforts to study, translate, and make rare manuscripts accessible to a wider audience. For the first time in Uzbekistan, the great scholar Hakim Tirmidhi’s “Al-Amsal min al-Kitab wa as-Sunnah” — a work that brings together instructive parables from the Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic Hadith, profound wisdom aimed at spiritual refinement, and ethical teachings has been fully translated into Uzbek and prepared for publication with scholarly annotations. This publication represents not only a major achievement in the field of Uzbek manuscript studies but also an important step toward restoring the nation’s centuries-old scholarly and spiritual heritage.
Drawing upon manuscripts preserved in the Center’s library collection as well as major manuscript repositories around the world, the complete scholarly translation of Hakim Tirmidhi’s “Al-Amsal min al-Kitab wa as-Sunnah” has been prepared for publication.
This project is the practical outcome of the initiatives launched under the directives of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan to promote the scholarly study, translation, and publication of the country's rare manuscript heritage.
A significant step in rediscovering scholarly heritage
Hakim Tirmidhi, one of the leading hadith scholars, thinkers, and renowned representatives of Islamic mysticism (Sufism) in the ninth century, is recognized as the founder of a distinctive intellectual tradition in the history of Islamic thought. His scholarly legacy has earned widespread recognition not only throughout the Muslim East but also among scholars worldwide.
The introductory section of the publication provides a comprehensive overview of Hakim Tirmidhi’s life and academic career, the history of research on his works, the attitude toward his legacy during the Soviet era, and the extensive efforts undertaken since Uzbekistan’s independence to revive and study his intellectual heritage.
The publication also offers an analytical overview of the initiatives implemented in New Uzbekistan to promote Hakim Tirmidhi’s legacy, restore and improve his mausoleum and pilgrimage complex, and introduce his scholarly contributions to the international academic community.
The work was translated and prepared for publication under scholarly editorial supervision by Abdushukurjon Muradov, Senior Research Fellow at the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan, and Bahodir A’zamov, Lecturer at the Tashkent Islamic Institute.
In addition to presenting valuable information on Hakim Tirmidhi’s life, his contribution to the development of Islamic sciences, and his rich scholarly legacy, the book also contains a detailed study of the surviving manuscript copies of “Al-Amsal min al-Kitab wa as-Sunnah” preserved in manuscript collections around the world, including their distinctive features, textual differences, and scholarly descriptions.
As a result, the publication stands not merely as a translation but also as a fundamental contribution to the field of manuscript studies and textual scholarship.
An important resource for educating the younger generation
According to Abdushukurjon Muradov, Senior Research Fellow at the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan, the greatest value of the work lies in its profound moral and educational significance.
“The primary value of this work lies in its collection of instructive examples drawn from the Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic Hadith, words of wisdom that illuminate the realities of life, the advice and counsel of distinguished scholars, and teachings that nurture human spiritual development. The book encourages people to pursue goodness, distinguish right from wrong, and cultivate virtues such as justice, honesty, patience, gratitude, and compassion.”
According to specialists, the book should be regarded not only as a religious and educational source but also as a comprehensive guide to moral upbringing, ethical development, and spiritual maturity.
The wisdom, life lessons, and moral guidance contained in the book have retained their relevance to this day. They continue to serve as a valuable source of inspiration, particularly in educating the younger generation in the spirit of national and universal human values.
Published in full Uzbek translation for the first time
One of the publication’s most significant achievements is that “Al-Amsal min al-Kitab wa as-Sunnah” has, for the first time in Uzbekistan, been translated into Uzbek in its entirety. In addition, several complex passages have been supplemented with scholarly commentary and explanatory notes to enhance readers’ understanding.
This makes the work readily accessible not only to scholars and researchers but also to a broad readership, enabling a wider audience to benefit from its rich intellectual and spiritual content.
The publication of this work by Hakim Tirmidhi is another vivid example of the practical results of the consistent policy pursued by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to study, preserve, and promote the nation’s scholarly heritage.
Undoubtedly, the publication of this book will take its rightful place in history as an important step toward the deeper study of Hakim Tirmidhi’s legacy, the restoration of the invaluable scholarly and spiritual heritage left by our ancestors, and its transmission to future generations.
It is worth noting that the First International Forum on Islamic Civilization will be held from 7 to 11 July this year in Tashkent, Samarkand, and Termez. The forum will bring together nearly 300 distinguished foreign guests, scholars, religious leaders, and representatives of international organizations from more than 40 countries. Its primary objective is to present to the international community the true essence of Islam as a religion founded on peace, tolerance, knowledge, enlightenment, and humanity. The forum will feature scholarly discussions, international exhibitions, presentations of rare manuscripts, and a variety of cultural and educational events showcasing the rich heritage of Islamic civilization.
