Russia News: “Moderation is the most effective response to extremism: Why is the international dialogue taking place in Samarkand so important?”
Russia News reported that at the international conference titled “The Legacy of Imam Maturidi: The Foundation of Moderation, Tolerance, and Enlightenment,” held within the framework of the First International Islamic Civilization Forum in Samarkand, the Maturidi school of thought was recognized as one of the most effective intellectual responses to extremism and radicalism. According to the publication, the conference brought together more than 100 international scholars and religious leaders to discuss the study of Imam Maturidi’s legacy, the promotion of his principles of moderation and tolerance, and ways to strengthen the relevance of this scholarly heritage in contemporary society.
On the third day of the First International Islamic Civilization Forum, an international scientific and practical conference titled “The Legacy of Imam Maturidi: The Foundation of Moderation, Tolerance, and Enlightenment” was held in Samarkand.
The event brought together more than 100 distinguished scholars, muftis, heads of religious affairs institutions, and experts from various countries around the world. The conference was opened by Komiljon Shermukhamedov, Director of the Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center. In his keynote address, he spoke about the reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan in the field of religious enlightenment and highlighted the contemporary significance of the Maturidi school of thought.
Among the speakers were Muhammad Abdulrahman Al-Duwaini, Adviser to the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar; Murtaza Bedir, Director of the Center for Islamic Studies; Sheikh Nazir Muhammad Ayyad, Grand Mufti of Egypt; Davronbek Makhsudov, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Religious Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan; Zulkifli Hasan, Malaysia’s Minister in charge of Religious Affairs; and Gulten Bedrettin, President of the Islamic Society of Finland.
The speakers emphasized that the Maturidi school represents a strong intellectual and scholarly foundation for moderate Islam and serves as an important instrument in countering radicalism and extremist ideologies.
The Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center is today recognized as one of the leading academic institutions dedicated to the in-depth study of moderate Islamic teachings, the research of Imam Maturidi’s rich scholarly legacy, and its promotion at the international level.
Historically, the Maturidi school has been the predominant theological tradition across Central Asia, the Volga region, and parts of the Caucasus. For centuries, it has played a significant role in shaping an Islamic civilization grounded in scholarship, statehood, tolerance, and interethnic harmony.
The conference continues its work through thematic panel sessions.
