Participants of the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) discover Uzbekistan from a new perspective
Participants of the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), representing nearly 100 countries, visited the Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan, where they explored the country’s centuries-old scientific heritage and experienced its state-of-the-art museum technologies.
The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is one of the world’s most prestigious scientific competitions. Its participants are regarded as the next generation of scientists, researchers, and innovators.
Among the participants was Leon Kopeloff from Trinidad and Tobago, who said that his first impressions of Uzbekistan far exceeded his expectations.
“We came here as part of the International Chemistry Olympiad and had the opportunity to visit the Islamic Civilization Center. Based on everything I have seen so far, I can confidently say that Uzbekistan truly is the heart of Central Asia. Its history and culture are incredibly rich. Every exhibition tells a remarkable story. Visiting this place has been an unforgettable experience for us.”
According to Jasper Husken from the Netherlands, the national costumes, ancient coins, pottery, and other exhibits allowed visitors to experience Uzbekistan directly rather than simply learning about it through books or the internet. He also noted that the hospitality and warmth of the Uzbek people left a lasting impression on him.
Other participants emphasized that the museum’s greatest strength lies not merely in displaying historical artifacts, but in explaining their meaning, historical context, and significance in the development of human civilization.
Chloe, a participant from Australia, said that the Center had greatly enriched her understanding of the Silk Road civilization and the scientific heritage of the Islamic world.
“I was deeply impressed by Uzbekistan’s history and its role as a major center of civilization. It was fascinating to see how knowledge and culture spread across the world through the Silk Road. After visiting this place, I began to look at history from an entirely different perspective. To be honest, I fell in love with Uzbekistan.”
Another Australian participant, Daniel, noted that the Center is a successful blend of traditional architecture and modern museum technologies.
He explained that although he had previously seen the Center online, its actual appearance and the quality of its exhibitions far exceeded his expectations.
A fellow Australian participant added that, at first glance, he assumed the building was a centuries-old historical monument. He was genuinely surprised to learn that it is a contemporary architectural project. In his view, the harmonious combination of national architectural traditions and modern design solutions makes the Center truly unique.
Tim, a participant from Canada, highly praised the Gallery of Great Figures and the museum’s exhibitions, noting that the museum does more than present historical information it tells the story of a nation’s cultural memory and identity through a modern and engaging approach.
At the conclusion of the visit, participants of the International Chemistry Olympiad emphasized that such cultural visits not only promote scientific cooperation among young researchers but also strengthen mutual understanding among different civilizations, cultures, and peoples.
