10 interesting facts about the scholar recognized by Imam Bukhari

04.06.2025, 21:171981

  • The full name of the scholar born in 824 in the village of Bug’ near Termez is Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Sawrah ibn Musa ibn Zahdak Sulami Bughi Tirmidhi.
  • During his long journeys through Iraq, Isfahan, Khorasan, Mecca, and Medina, he studied under the greatest scholars of his time in the fields of Qur’anic recitation, rhetoric, jurisprudence, history, and hadith.
  • Imam Bukhari, considered a contemporary of Imam Tirmidhi, praised him highly during their meetings in Nishapur, saying: “I have benefited from you more than you have benefited from me”.
  • In the field of hadith, Imam Tirmidhi was taught by notable scholars such as Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim, and Qutaybah ibn Sa’id.
  • In his work, Imam Tirmidhi thoughtfully presented and balanced the differing views between the Ahl Hadith and Ahl Ra’y schools, which has led to his recognition as an ecumenical (or eclectic) hadith scholar.
  • He compiled the authoritative hadith collection Sahih Tirmidhi, also referred to in sources as Jami’ Tirmidhi or Sunan Tirmidhi, one of the six canonical hadith collections.
  • Another of his important works is Shamā’il Nabawiyya, written in Arabic and containing 408 hadiths. A 16th-century manuscript of this book is preserved in the library of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan.
  • According to sources, Imam Tirmidhi lost his eyesight in the final years of his life.
  • The 1200th anniversary of his birth was widely celebrated in Uzbekistan. During the years of independence, his memorial complex was restored and turned into a revered site of pilgrimage.
  • Currently, the Center of Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan is implementing the “Abu Isa Tirmidhi” media project, which includes the creation of a catalog of manuscripts of Imam Tirmidhi’s works preserved in both Uzbekistan and international collections. Digital and facsimile editions are being prepared, and a documentary video about the thinker is being produced.
